*To receive the full benefit of your HSA, I will be required to provide a mental health diagnosis. Otherwise, if you wish to tap your HSA, there may be a tax penalty for what is considered a "non-qualified medical expense". It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company prior to using your HSA for counseling.
Tax Benefit: The IRS states, "you can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for therapy received as medical treatment" (Public 502). What this means is your can include the therapy as a medical expense as long as you have a diagnosis.
Median Session Fees 2018
I do not accept insurance payments. When a counselor bills an insurance company for counseling, the insurance company requires a medical mental health diagnosis, and dictates aspects of the treatment, for example, the number of total sessions allotted, and the maximum length of time allotted for each session. Also, some people who seek counseling services may not meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis, while others may meet the full criteria. I believe insurance requirements add pressure to form a diagnosis even when it may not be accurate or beneficial to do so. Some professionals, like myself, prefer to work outside of these constraints and pressures.
If you would like to work through your insurance company, I am considered an out-of-network provider. This means I can provide you with a detailed receipt, which you can then submit to your insurance company to obtain partial out-of-network insurance reimbursement. You should speak with your insurance company about this option before your scheduled appointment with me to obtain their pre-approval for this option.
